Would you like to help make the Marshall Scholarship more accessible to students everywhere?
Please join the Marshall Scholarship Diversity Outreach Initiative.
We exist to contribute to the mission of the Marshall Scholarship: to attract the most qualified and diverse applicants, with a special focus on providing support and resources to students from groups historically underrepresented in the Scholarship. Applying for a prestigious fellowship is an intimidating process, and many talented students lack an awareness of graduate school options and fellowships, or may fear that such opportunities are out of reach. These hurdles are especially high for first-generation college students and students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. While some schools have robust support for students applying to prestigious fellowships, including connections with alumni of those fellowships, many schools do not.
As a volunteer with the AMS Diversity Outreach Initiative, you may participate in recruitment events hosted by nearby colleges or UK consulates, or we might connect you directly with potential applicants who are looking for one-on-one conversations with alumni. We hope that, by speaking about your experiences as a Marshall Scholar and how the Scholarship has influenced your career and personal life, you will be able to help students in deciding whether to apply, and get them excited about the idea of living and studying in the U.K. You will be asked NOT to assist students with writing essays or preparing other application materials.
The time commitment each year is typically only a few hours total, and you are welcome to let us know your preferences and availability when you sign up. ALL alumni are welcome to volunteer, whether or not you yourself are part of an underrepresented community.
If you're willing to participate, please let us know by filling out our brief recruitment survey!
If you've volunteered with us before, we thank you, and hope you'll sign up again this year!
