Maryland Governor Appoints 1999 Marshall Scholar, Dr. Meena Seshamani, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health

The State of Maryland announced Meena Seshamani, a Marshall Scholar from the class of 1999, has been appointed Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health by Governor Wes Moore.

Dr. Seshamani is among the nation’s top health leaders, with a career spanning public service, clinical practice, economics, academia, and advocacy. She most recently served as Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicare at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where she led the Medicare program, stood up the historic Medicare Drug Price Negotiation program, and implemented initiatives to expand support for individuals with disabilities and family caregivers.

“Dr. Seshamani made significant improvements to drug affordability, health equity and access for the 64 million Americans who receive US Medicare, during her tenure at its helm ,” noted Dr. Nell Breyer, Executive Director of the Association of Marshall Scholars. “As Maryland’s new Secretary of Health, Dr. Seshamani will no doubt continue her commitment to furthering medical innovations and holistic care through improvements to the state’s public health policy and services.” 

Prior to CMS, Dr. Seshamani was Vice President of Clinical Care Transformation at MedStar Health, where she designed and implemented population health initiatives and advised Maryland’s COVID-19 response. Earlier in her career, she served as Director of the Office of Health Reform at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, leading implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

As a 1999 Marshall Scholar, Dr. Meena Seshamani completed her Ph.D in Health Economics from Oxford University. She served as Board President of the Association of Marshall Scholars from 2020 to 2022.
