Melissa Lane (Marshall Scholar 1989) Elected to theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has announced that Melissa Lane has been elected as a 2026 Fellow in recognition of her contributions to political philosophy and the study of ancient and modern political thought.
Lane, a Marshall scholar from the class of 1989, is University Professor of Politics at Princeton University and a leading scholar of ancient Greek political philosophy, democratic theory, and the history of political thought. Her work explores how classical ideas continue to shape modern political institutions and civic life.
Lane’s research and teaching have had a significant impact on the field of political theory, particularly in connecting classical philosophy to present-day debates about democracy, citizenship, and environmental responsibility. Her work is noted for its intellectual rigor and its ability to engage broad audiences beyond the academy.
As a Marshall Scholar at the University of Cambridge, Lane received her MPhil in Philosophy.
